I’m late with this post y’all, but for good reason.
Like many of us, I was hit hard by the SCOTUS rollback of access to legal abortion. That led me to write a VERY personal column (shared in my last post), “I Survived Rape and Illegal Abortion, Other Women Shouldn’t Have to do the Same,” for MadameNoire.
After sharing that, I had to hit “pause” in the name of selfcare. Big thanks to everyone who came forward with warm support and encouragement — I deeply appreciate you!
Here’s the thing: the current rollback of our rights isn’t random. The rights to vote, to abortion, to contraception, to same-sex relationships and marriages, etc., have a common theme.
Once we get past all the static of the pundits, pontificators, and propagandists, once we process our own emotional responses, we can see what ties them together: Political Whiteness.
Check it out: with reports that the death rate for white people in the US is higher than the white birth rate, the rapid “Browning of America” is viewed as a threat to white survival and dominance. And if you’ve built a system on the premise that “majority rules,” then find yourself in the minority, you’re going to do whatever you can to retain power.
I turned to Sir Auntie Mane of Militantly Mixed to dive into this messy topic. We took it on because the better we understand what we’re up against, the more effectively we can advocate for our rights and for the rights of others.
