These days, what conscious Person of the Global Majority living in these United States doesn’t have racial battle fatigue? Especially those of us working and living in the professional realm?
You know what I mean—the ways our mental and physical health are affected by that overwhelming stew of trauma, rage, fear, grief, and consciousness that weighs upon our hearts, minds, and souls as we navigate the never-ending maze of isms that challenge our humanity, threaten our peace, and straight-up disrupt our lives. It’s being too familiar with the marrow-deep reverberations of Ancestor Fannie Lou Hamer’s “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired” as we fight in seemingly every area of our lives.
So, when I heard about Janet Stickmon and her course in healing racial battle fatigue, I rushed to learn more. And then to share the goodies with YOU!
CenterJoyPWR®: Strategies for Healing Racial Battle Fatigue is a self-paced, 6-week online experience designed to create a space for professionals of color to rest, reflect, and recenter as they move toward healing their racial battle fatigue.
Janet is a Blackapina (Black and Filipina) professor of Humanities and Ethnic Studies at Napa Valley College, educator trainer, and wellness consultant committed to pursuing and promoting joy. She has authored “Blackapina” as well as several books including the recent To Black Parents Visiting Earth: Raising Black Children in the 21st Century. Janet also has 25 years’ experience practicing meditation and integrating meditative practices throughout all her courses.
“I started studying racial battle fatigue—the psychological, behavioral, and physiological strain experienced by People of Color when fighting against or coping with racism—in 2016,” she said. “The term was first coined by Dr. William A. Smith at the University of Utah. Until then I didn’t know there was a name for what I was experiencing.
“I found Dr. Smith’s research to be freeing, and to have it connected to racism was a key component,” Janet explained. “In 2020, I started offering a live virtual group coaching program originally called #SoulCarePWR and later known as CenterJoyPWR®: Strategies for Healing Racial Battle Fatigue.”
So what is CenterJoyPWR®: Strategies for Healing Racial Battle Fatigue?
“During the program, I create a space for professionals of color to learn how to take steps toward healing their racial battle fatigue and tapping back into what brings them joy,” Janet said.
“The program offers frameworks drawn from my personal experience and research from a combination of fields including: neuroscience, psychoneuroimmunology, mindfulness, Ethnic Studies, and sports medicine.”
