Mixed Identity by the Numbers: Personal Identities vs Percentages
Plus: Exciting UPDATES on the Be Your Mixed-Ass Self Anthology!
Mixed identity is often a numbers game. We’re frequently defined by others—from governments to individuals—according to a formula of Ancestral percentages.
It can be easy to define ourselves that same way: “I’m half X and half Y.” or “I’m a quarter X, half Y, and a quarter Z,” and etc. I’m always tickled when folks (me included) break out the odd numbers, like thirds, fifths, and sevenths. Just sayin’…
Enter science! Today, with DNA testing easily available, millions of folks have their saliva analyzed in exchange for greater knowledge about from whence their Ancestors came. This takes the numbers game to the next level!
We see lots of Mixed folks posting their DNA results online. It’s easy to understand the relief and euphoria of finally getting insights into the details of our heritages. And how, for many, it serves as a form of proof, evidence, validation of lineage that might not show up phenotypically or be culturally available.
But wait! Could there be a downside to Mixed-identity-by-the-numbers?
Might there be a better, more self-loving, affirming, and empowering way than data-driven equations for us Mixed folks to embrace our full selves?
Sir Auntie Sharmane Fury and I dove DEEP into the significance of defining our identities within and beyond percentages and DNA tests. We delve into the complexities of the many ways we identify, and how data impacts our journeys.
